NDIS Bathroom Renovations & Modifications in the Illawarra

NDIS Bathroom Modifications in the Illawarra

NDIS Bathroom Modifications in the Illawarra

For many people living with disability in Wollongong and the wider Illawarra, the bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the home to get right. An NDIS bathroom modification turns a standard bathroom into a safe, accessible space that supports independence, dignity, and everyday confidence, without it having to look clinical.

At Just Bathrooms, we’re a local bathroom supplier, not a building company, and we’re glad to help NDIS participants, occupational therapists, and builders by supplying the right accessible fixtures and finishes. This guide walks through how NDIS funding for bathroom modifications works, the products available, and how to plan a build that is both practical and beautiful. Always confirm the specifics with your own NDIS planner and occupational therapist, as every plan is different.

Understanding NDIS Funding for Bathroom Modifications

Understanding NDIS Funding for Bathroom Modifications

Bathroom changes are usually funded through the Home Modifications category of your Capital Supports budget, when they are assessed as “reasonable and necessary” and directly related to your disability. The process almost always starts with an occupational therapist (OT) assessment: your OT reviews how you use the bathroom, recommends the specific modifications, and prepares a report that supports your funding request.

Modifications are generally grouped into two types. Minor home modifications cover changes like grab rails, a handheld shower on a rail, lever tapware, or a fold-down shower seat. Complex (major) home modifications involve structural work, such as removing a shower hob to create a level-entry shower or widening a doorway, and these typically require quotes from a suitably qualified building practitioner. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is a separate funding stream for purpose-built housing and is assessed differently again.

The clearest path is to speak with your OT and your support coordinator or Local Area Coordinator early. Once your modifications are approved, we can help you and your builder select compliant products that match the OT’s recommendations.

Curbless & Level-Entry Showers for Accessibility

Curbless & Level-Entry Showers for Accessibility

A curbless, level-entry shower is the centrepiece of most accessible bathrooms. By removing the step-over hob, you reduce trip hazards and allow safe access for walkers, shower commodes, and wheelchairs. Pairing the shower with a linear floor drain and a gentle floor fall keeps water where it belongs while maintaining that seamless, modern look.

The hidden hero of any level-entry shower is the waterproofing. Because there’s no hob to contain water, getting the membrane and falls right is critical, which is why we stock trusted systems from Ardex and Mapei. Add a handheld shower on an adjustable rail and large-format non-slip tiles, and you have a shower that is as durable and stylish as it is accessible.

Grab Rails, Seating & Accessible Accessories

Grab Rails, Seating & Accessible Accessories

Support fixtures no longer have to look like they belong in a hospital. Modern, designer grab rails from brands like Phoenix, Meir, and Nero come in finishes such as matte black and brushed gold, and many double as towel rails for a coordinated look. Your OT will specify the right placement and load rating for your needs, and we can match those requirements to a finish that suits your bathroom.

Beyond rails, the right bathroom accessories, like fold-down shower seats, accessible robe hooks, and easy-reach shelving, make daily routines safer and simpler. Thoughtful accessory choices are often the difference between a bathroom that is merely compliant and one that genuinely feels good to use.

Accessible Toilets, Tapware & Easy-Use Fixtures

Accessible Toilets, Tapware & Easy-Use Fixtures

Small fixture choices have a big impact on independence. Comfort-height or wall-faced toilets reduce the effort of sitting and standing, and smart toilets with integrated bidet functions support better hygiene for people with limited mobility. Brands like Caroma and Fienza offer accessible options that don’t compromise on style.

Easy-to-operate tapware matters just as much. Lever and mixer taps are far simpler to use than traditional knobs, especially for anyone with reduced grip or strength. Across trusted ranges from Phoenix and Fienza, we can help you choose fixtures that are intuitive, reliable, and easy to keep clean.
